About Us

Our Company:

Great River Energy is a generation and transmission (G&T) cooperative that provides wholesale electric service to 28 distribution co-ops that serve more than 620,000 members.

Power Lines:

Great River Energy owns more than 4,500 miles of transmission power lines and owns or co-owns more than 100 transmission substations. Our power lines cover about 60 percent of Minnesota and run into North Dakota and Wisconsin.

Power Plants:

Our 2,800-megawatt generation system comprises an effective mix of base load and peaking power plants, including coal, refuse-derived fuel, natural gas and oil plants, as well as wind generation.

Energy Wise:

Saving energy means saving money. We want to help you save both. We offer a number of energy saving tips that will help you make your home more energy efficient. Learn how to be Energy Wise®.

Renewables:

As Great River Energy continues to grow, our new power generation will include more environmentally sound renewable energy sources. Our power sources already include wind energy, refuse-derived fuel and hydropower. We are looking at ways to further diversify our energy portfolio by exploring biomass, fuel cells, clean coal and other technologies as they become available.
