American/Canadian Everest Expedition arrives in Kathmandu
Elk River, MN (August 15, 2001) - The American/Canadian Everest Expedition team, sponsored by Touchstone Energy®, arrived in Kathmandu, Nepal on August 11 after two days of travel including a one-night stay in Hong Kong.
“I have to say that spirits are high with anticipation of what lies before us on this expedition,” wrote Ed Hommer in his first dispatch “on the road” in Nepal. “I think I speak for the whole team when I say that we still find it a little hard to believe that we’re here and we’ll be enroute one day from now to the north face of Mt. Everest. It seems like only a veiled dream 14 months ago when the first planning stages began to make this climb a reality.”
Hommer is a double amputee from Duluth, Minnesota. He would be the first double amputee to summit Mt. Everest, the world’s highest mountain.
Great River Energy of Elk River, Minnesota, a Touchstone Energy cooperative, has created a special web site tracking the climb at www.everestquest.com. The site has been designed specifically for teachers and students to follow the climb and experience the technical challenges involved. The site will be updated regularly with journal entries and photos from the team.
Touchstone Energy is a national alliance of electric cooperatives.
