Tour of Coal Creek Station

Coal Creek Station, North Dakotas largest power plant, features two units with a total generation capacity of over 1,100 megawatts. Ground was broken for Coal Creek Station in the fall of 1974. The plant started generating electricity from Unit 1 in 1979 and from Unit 2 in 1980.

At Great River Energy, we didn't brag about our commitment to the environment. We built it. Our new headquarters building is one of the most energy-efficient and sustainable buildings in the country. It is part of our promise to practice, as well as promote, energy conservation in Minnesota.

DryFining

Great River Energy's Coal Creek Station, near Underwood, ND, is using a process to DryFineTM all the coal used at Coal Creek Station to make it cleaner and more efficient. The power plant is enhancing the power of lignite using a product that otherwise would be wasted, the waste heat from Coal Creek Station.
