Great River Energy reports no outages during Y2k rollover

Elk River, MN (January 1, 2000) - Great River Energy, a generation and transmission cooperative headquartered in Elk River, Minnesota reports no outages or disturbances in its service area during the Y2K rollover.

“Everything went great overnight, but we’re going to continue monitoring our system over the next few days to make sure it stays that way,” agrees Sam Kokkinen, who coordinated the Y2K effort for Great River Energy. “Early on, we completed an inventory of our software and microprocessor-based systems and tested vulnerable systems. We were certain that those systems that were critical to Great River Energy operations would run. And they did.”

Great River Energy’s Y2K efforts were reviewed and coordinated with the Mid-Continent Area Power Pool, the region’s reliability council, which operates under the direction of the North American Electric Reliability Council.

Great River Energy will continue to provide system status reports to the Minnesota Emergency Operations Center through Sunday, January 2.

Great River Energy is a generation and transmission cooperative providing electrical energy and related services to 29 distribution cooperatives in Minnesota and Wisconsin serving approximately 1.2 million people.
