Great River Energy takes pride in conducting its business with the highest ethical standards and concern for the environment. Environmental considerations are part of everyday business at Great River Energy. Great River Energy is committed to conserving resources through environmental stewardship, pollution prevention, waste minimization, recycling and reuse.

To guide employees in their decision-making process and to ensure that environmental considerations are part of the process, Great River Energy has established an environmental policy.

“Environmental responsibility” is also one of the organization’s strategic imperatives, which form the foundation for Great River Energy’s vision and mission.

Great River Energy is developing environmental management systems (EMS) for its generating plants and transmission system. In 1998, Coal Creek Station was successfully certified to ISO 14001, an international standard of excellence for environmental management. In June 2003, Pleasant Valley Station also obtained ISO 14001 certification. The following year, Lakefield Junction Station became ISO 14001 certified. Most recently, Great River Energy’s transmission system received certification of its environmental management system. Great River Energy is the only generation and transmission cooperative in the United States with ISO 14001 certified facilities. Great River Energy’s goal is to certify all of its plants.
