Power Plants:
Great River Energy's service
area includes some of the fastest growing communities in the region. In
addition to the generation projects we are currently pursuing, Great River
Energy will need to add significant resources in the coming years to meet
its growing demand. We have identified the need to add approximately 1,100
MW (megawatts) of capacity over the next 15 years to satisfy an increase
in member demand for electricity.
Renewables:
As Great River Energy continues to grow, our new power
generation will include more environmentally sound renewable energy sources.
We are looking at ways to further diversify our energy portfolio by exploring
biomass, fuel cells and other technologies.

Substations:
Great River Energy currently owns or partially owns more
than 100 transmission substations. We continuously update and enhance
these facilities.
Future Plans
& Studies:
Great River Energy operates in a region with a growing appetite
for energy. We must continually monitor this growth and plan for the future.
In addition, Minnesota utilities jointly sponsor the Minnesota
Electric Transmission Planning website so that the public can become more
involved in planning. For more information about the state's transmission
planning process, visit the website.

Power Lines:
Great River Energy must continuously update and expand our
transmission system to serve the growth in our area. We own more than
4,400 miles of transmission power lines. These lines cover about 60 percent
of Minnesota and run into North Dakota and Wisconsin.
